Champions Awards recognize leaders in the LGBT Sports Community and include MVP Award, Trailblazer Award, and Community Support Award.
Each year Team DC recognizes people in our community that have helped support --and in some instances create teams within-- the LGBT sports community. We know that these people put in long hours to help ensure that we have a safe environment to compete, meet new people, take pride in our community and have some fun along the way. This year's ceremony will take place at Nellie's Sports Bar Sunday, October 3 beginning at 11 AM. (Please note that the event was moved from the Diamond Club at Nationals Park because of a scheduling conflict and the price was reduced accordingly.)
We are delighted to welcome former NFL Commissioner Paul Tagliabue as our guest speaker at the Brunch. Paul served as the Commissioner of the National Football League for 17 years and is internationally recognized as an innovative leader in sports development and outreach. In addition, Paul is a proud member of PFLAG (Parents and Friends of Lesbians And Gays) and was strongly supportive of DC's effort to bid to host the Gay Games in 2014.
We are also pleased to announce this year's winners include:
MVP Award: Jack Fleming (Volleyball) and Matt Feinberg (Tennis)
Trailblazer Award: Tim Francis (Basketball) and Neil Schuldenfrei (Ice Skating)
Community Support: Greg Diamond and the Washington Nationals Baseball Club (Night OUT at the Nationals)
In addition, we will recognize the winners of the 2010 Team DC College Scholarships that are given annually to gay and lesbian students who compete openly as gay athletes. We are proud to announce that this year's winners are Alexis Waxenfelter (Towson State-Snowboarding) and Clayton Miller (Virginia Tech-Swimmer and Water Polo). Proceeds from the Brunch help support this important program.
Tickets are $30 each and includes a wonderful unlimited Breakfast Brunch with Mimosas, the Awards Ceremony and a chance to hear from former NFL Commissioner, Paul Tagliabue.
