Since the first Gay Games in 1982, DC has sent athletes to represent the region and compete in the spirit of Participation, Inclusion and Personal Best. Later this year, Gay Games VIII will open in Cologne, Germany on July 31 and continue through August 7 and once again, Team DC will be organizing the effort for participants from the greater Washington, DC metropolitan region to attend.
Gay Games Website
Everything you need to know about the Gay Games can be found at their website. All the latest updates, Registration, special tours and events that will be available for people attending the Games, news about performers and special guests and links to teams and Sponsors.
Registration
There is still plenty of time to register and slots are still available in all of the sports and cultural activities. We strongly recommend that if you and/or your team plans to go, that you register NOW. This will ensure you a spot at the Gay Games in the event that you want. It is unclear if there will be any further Registration discounts offered, so if you know you are going, then go ahead and register.
Team DC Host Hotel
Team DC has secured 40 rooms at the Intercontinental Hotel (1 Pippenstrasse), a luxury 5 star property for a great price of 99 Euros/night for a single or 110 Euros for a double. This price is inclusive of all taxes, fees, and a free American breakfast each morning. Many thanks to our friends at Helms-Briscoe for finding this great deal for our group. This hotel is close to the main train station as well as the subway...easy walking distance to both.
Here are the rules regarding the hotel room block:
- The room block is only available until May 7 or until all the rooms are gone. While we could probably arrange additional rooms after that, it is no guarantee and the price will likely be dramatically higher.
- If you would like to access one of the rooms in the Team DC room block, you will need to email Brent Minor at president@teamdc.org and you will receive a booking form that will allow you to reserve a room directly with the hotel. Our role is only to provide you with the hotel code to ensure that Team DC has first access to these rooms.
- You will have to book your room directly with the Intercontinental and provide them with a credit card. We cannot use the typical Intercontinental booking system that is online because of the special deal we secured. Booking directly with our contact (Anna Frank) will ensure that you are part of the Team DC block of rooms and get the discounted price.
- Every booking will result in an automatic payment for the first night which is non-refundable. You will be able to cancel your reservation until May 28 without a larger penalty, but that first night's payment is absolutely NON-REFUNDABLE.
- Cancellations after May 28 will be charged 90% of the full booking unless we can find someone to take your reservation. Even if we find someone to take the room, just know that you will still be charged for that first night.
- We will work to fill all of these slots as soon as possible and welcome your friends and teammates from other cities that might want to access this room block. This is not exclusive to Team DC, but we do want our members to get the first opportunity.
- The Room Block is available from July 20-August 16, 2010 in case you plan to get there early or stay late.
Team DC Uniforms and Trading Pins
A key part of the Opening Ceremonies is the Parade of Athletes. Team DC is selling "uniforms" for this. Order now! Remember, those without a uniform will be asked to march at the back of the DC contingent!
Trading Pins have also been designed and are available to anyone. Trading Pins become quite the collector's item at the Games, so you will want plenty to trade.
Special Events
